NEW TRENDS

Make Up Trends:

Bold and bright is the order of the day for summer 2008 make-up, with the major color houses bringing a wealth of floral-inspired shades alongside a kaleidoscope of cocktail color.

The Looks:

Taking inspiration straight from the catwalks, eyes are attention-grabbing color this season.

From subtle liner shades, or metallic lids, the style progresses to up-to-the-eyebrow rainbow blending.

Think of the 1970s for a theme based on a kaleidoscope of bold coloring that clashes, yet complements, all at the same time.

Lips are secondary, either blanked out in nudes or set to complement in varying shades of pink. The complexion is flawless and soft, with a hint of radiant blush highlighting cheeks and a touch of shimmer completing the look.

Sea Shades

Prepping us for the summer holidays, serene seaside hues are common this season.

Splashings of Sea Breeze blue and Sea Grass green can be seen along with deeper midnight tones.

Raspberry Pickings

Every shade of berry-based pink is seen for spring 2008.

Vivid tones sit neatly alongside paler dusty hues, with offerings ranging from the depth Purple lipstick, to Strawberry/Raspberry Pop Stick Blush for cheeks, and multi-colored Fleur de Feu eye palette.

Bold Brights

Tying in with the eye-popping look, a bold, bright and

brilliant color palette can be seen across make-up this

season.

Think tropical for shades that incorporate everything from citrus yellow to candy pink, sky blue and tomato red. A cocktail of colors designed to literally be painted on.

Key Women's Looks:

SPRING/SUMMER 2008 - There is a soft, light-as-air feeling to spring. Sheer silk dresses are so delicate they might fly off at a hint of summer breeze; florals burst into bloom, while sweet violet in all its sugared shades is the new spotlight color. Feminine, flared and flirty, the dirndl skirt suits the season's free-spirited mood, and even denim turns soft, in faded blue washes and wispy frayed seams. The ultimate indulgence? Hand-painted fabrics. The emblem you must have? Stars, stars and stars.

Women's Hair Trends

The big news for hair next season is for fluffy finishes and frizzy volume - think crimping, brushed out curls and the birds-nest updo. On the other hand, wet-look styles also make a big splash for summer styling.

Birds-nest updos

* First seen on the New York runways, the birds-nest updo is the key statement for dressed hair next season

* Candyfloss textures are achieved through backcombing and teasing

* Wispy, flyaway ends create a halo of frizz

* Hair is shaped into soft bouffants, sometimes slouching at the back.

Whispy Frizz

* Fluff and frizz is the key statement for hair next season

* Frizzy ends are achieved through vigorously brushed out curls

* Ends look dry and unconditioned

* Hair is flat at the crown but fluffs out at the ends

* Ponytails are backcombed to create frizz

* Working alongside the mood for fluff and frizz comes a resurgence for the 80s trend for crimping

Key Men's Looks:

The recent men's catwalk shows welcomed spring/summer 2008 with bright primary colors, warm neutrals, some classic materials and a few innovative new ones. WGSN pinpoints the key colors and materials for footwear and accessories.

With a move towards functionality, a range of technical performance fabrics made their way into men's accessories collections. Fabrics resembling wetsuits and military garb were fashioned into utility hold alls and even infiltrated footwear collections. This offers a more contemporary, functional look for casual accessories, in contrast to classic leather and canvas combinations or high-luxe exotic leather products.

Men's Hair Trends

The 50s quiff continued from last season but styled as a neater backward flick, referencing the versions more frequently seen on women.

The 'Pompadour' look made popular by Danny Zuko and the T-Birds in Grease still had its place however, while the side parting came into play for a refreshing combi-style.

Flying forward

Brushed forward was taken to an extreme as the past short back and sides look grew out.

Describing some styles as covering the eyes is perhaps an understatement as several stretched down to the nose and beyond. Swept and shiny was the mainstay of this trend, with some labels opting for a gel-infused look to create a spiky, poker-straight trim.

The geek chic look is growing in popularity, with the side parted version key for autumn/winter.
